Heredity

Heredity

In addition to secure storage, the most important function of OctoPass is passing on your digital legacy. You will find the corresponding function in the browser extension or in the app: Data inheritance. There you can generate a secure key that you can pass on to a trusted person / your heirs.

After your death or in the event of permanent incapacity due to an accident or illness, your authorized representative can request your digital inheritance. This is done either in your own OctoPass account by clicking on “Claim inheritance”. Or, if the authorized representative does not yet have their own OctoPass account, by registering as an heir on the website.

In your OctoPass vault, select the Data inheritance item. Here you select Inheritance and generate a mandate. This mandate contains a secure ID and a key that you share with your authorized representative. You can copy the key digitally and send it on or create a pdf of the mandate and pass the key on with it.

If someone claims your inheritance and wants to gain access to your safe, a security period is automatically activated during which your safe cannot be opened. During this time, you will be contacted using the contact details you have stored. You can also enter additional contact details in the settings so that OctoPass can contact you by e-mail, telephone or SMS (not in the trial version). Here you have the option to object to the inheritance. When creating the mandate, you also have the option of determining the length of the security period under Settings.

Of course. To do this, you start a new inheritance process in your OctoPass account and create a new mandate. This invalidates the existing key and only the new one can be used.

You can give the key to open your safe to as many people as you like. Please note that only the first person to request the key will be considered. Each key can only be used once and then becomes invalid.

Whoever requests the inheritance with the key and is granted access has full access to your OctoPass account for 90 days free of charge. If the heir wishes to access your vault for longer than 90 days, a separate account is required for a fee.

Yes, and this is a good and sensible option for (married) partners. You simply exchange the keys to your OctoPass accounts.
